Walking into a yoga studio for the first time can feel unfamiliar. You may wonder where to put your mat, what to wear or whether you will understand the instructions. A few practical questions before you book can make the experience much easier to navigate.

Choose a class that welcomes beginners

Look for a session described as beginner, introductory or foundation level. Read the full description rather than choosing by the photograph or class name alone. Ask the teacher whether the session is suitable for someone completely new to yoga, and whether they explain movements as they go.

A short conversation is useful: tell them you are a beginner and ask what the class involves, how long it lasts and whether equipment is provided. You do not need to arrive already knowing the names of the poses.

Keep your kit simple

Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move without needing constant adjustment. Check whether the studio lends mats and props or asks you to bring your own. A water bottle and a small towel can be useful. Avoid buying a full collection of equipment before you have tried a class and discovered what you actually use.

Arrive with enough time to find the room, put away your belongings and speak to the teacher without rushing. Let them know about anything relevant to your participation, and ask how they offer alternatives during the session.

Ask about the teaching approach

Some teachers demonstrate frequently; others spend more time giving spoken instructions. Ask whether hands-on adjustments are used, and make your preferences clear. You should be able to ask questions and decline physical adjustments.

During class, you can pause and ask for an explanation. Trying to match the person on the next mat is less useful than understanding the instruction and finding a comfortable option with your teacher.

Leave room to reflect

Afterwards, consider whether you felt welcome, could follow the teaching and had time to ask questions. The first class is a chance to learn what suits you. The teacher, setting, schedule and pace all matter when deciding whether to return.

If you have an injury, a health condition, are pregnant or are unsure whether exercise is suitable, seek advice from a healthcare professional beforehand. Stop if you feel pain or become unwell.
