A clear look at this gentle hands-on approach, the limits of the research and how to choose a practitioner in London with confidence.
Bowen Technique, also called Bowen therapy or Bowenwork, is a complementary hands-on practice. It typically uses a sequence of gentle movements over soft tissue, with pauses between sets of movements. People may explore it for comfort, relaxation or musculoskeletal concerns, but it is not a substitute for an assessment when symptoms are new, persistent or getting worse.
Approaches can differ between practitioners. Ask what a session would involve for you rather than assuming every Bowen appointment follows the same routine.
A practitioner should begin by discussing your reasons for visiting, relevant health information and whether the approach is suitable for you. They should explain where touch will be used, how long the appointment will last, what it costs and whether you may remain clothed. You should be able to ask questions, set boundaries and stop at any time.
If a practitioner suggests Bowen Technique can diagnose or cure a medical condition, ask for the evidence and speak with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. Be wary of promises that you should stop prescribed treatment or avoid a medical assessment.
Research on Bowen Technique is limited. An Australian Government evidence evaluation found very low certainty evidence for effects on pain in the conditions it examined. An earlier systematic review also concluded that the evidence was not well documented and that better studies were needed. This means individual experiences should not be presented as proof that Bowen Technique treats a particular condition.
It may still be reasonable to discuss it as a complementary wellbeing choice, provided you understand the uncertainty, the cost and other options available to you.
What training and insurance does the practitioner have? What will happen during the session? Is there any reason your health history or current treatment might make it unsuitable? How many sessions are suggested, at what cost, and how will you decide whether to continue? A clear answer to these questions is more useful than a broad promise of results.
